Last Thursday, we swapped our desks for an evening of sparkle at Birmingham ICC, as we joined the National Children & Young People Awards. It was a night of celebration, and a powerful reminder of why the work we do matters so much.
At Residential Recruitment, we spend our days connecting talented, caring people with children’s residential homes across the country. We see first-hand how much dedication goes into this sector, but it isn’t often that we get to stop and see it celebrated all in one room. The awards did exactly that.
From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm and full of energy. The room was packed with people who give so much of themselves to children and young people: residential care workers, managers, foster carers, social workers and the organisations that support them. Hearing the stories behind each nomination was humbling. Behind every award is a young person whose life has been made better by someone who simply refused to give up on them.
One of the real highlights for me was spending time with Chris Wild and Alexandra Rudman, both care-experienced entrepreneurs. Meeting people who have lived the care system and gone on to build businesses of their own is the best possible reminder of what is possible when young people are given the right support, and of why the people who care for them matter so much.
Evenings like this are also a chance to listen. We caught up with providers and colleagues we work with every day, and met many new faces. The conversations kept coming back to the same thing: great care starts with great people, and the sector needs more of them.
A huge congratulations to every winner and finalist. You are a credit to the profession, and you make a real difference every single day. Thank you too to the organisers for putting together such a special event.
We came away feeling proud to play a small part in this community, and more motivated than ever to help find the right people for the homes and young people who need them.
